Avadi is a suburb in Chennai. In Tamil, Avadi means ‘a place full of cows’. Avadi, a municipality in Thiruvallur district, is about 23 kms northwest of Chennai and is surrounded by major defence establishments.
Avadi is well-connected with a good rail and road network. Theneighbourhood is servedby Avadi Railway Station,part of the Chennai Suburban Railway network. Suburban trains connectAvadi to Chennai Central, Chennai Beach, Arakonam, Thiruvallu and Tiruthani. A few express trainslike the Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai Mail also stop at Avadi railway station. Avadi also trains a division of the Tamil Nadu Police.
Avadi is home to many old temples. Some famous temples include KarumariAmman temple,Chinnammantemple,Nagavalli Amman and Perumaltemple. Vaikundhanaadhar Temple, Angaalamman temple, Sri VenkateswaraPerumal Temple are all located nearby. Thirumullaivoyal, near Avadi, is famous for MasilamaniswaraTemple, Thirumullaivoyal – an ancient temple of Lord Shiva as well as Pachaiamman Temple. Avadi is also home to a few mosques and churches as well. Vasupujiya Jain Temple and a Gurudwara is also located here.
